How We Test

The Oticon Real is a premium behind-the-ear prescription hearing aid released in 2023, carrying Oticon's highest price tier at $4,898 per pair. In HearAdvisor's lab testing, it achieved a SoundScore of 4.46 out of 5, earning an A grade and ranking in the top 24% of all prescription hearing aids tested.

Where the Oticon Real truly distinguishes itself is in speech understanding. Our measurements showed speech-in-quiet performance 1.19 points above the category average, and an impressive 1.58 points above average for speech in noise—a critical metric for real-world conversations in challenging environments. This strong speech performance contributed to the Oticon Real earning HearAdvisor's Expert's Choice Award in both 2023 and 2024.

The device does show some trade-offs in our testing. Feedback handling measured below the category average, and own-voice comfort scores were slightly lower than typical for this category. Music streaming quality varied between fit conditions, performing well above average in initial fit but more moderately after tuning. These results suggest users who prioritize speech clarity over streaming audio may find the Oticon Real particularly well-suited to their needs.

The Oticon Real offers flexible battery options with both rechargeable and disposable configurations, plus streaming compatibility with iPhone and Android devices including hands-free calling. Within its premium price range, it faces stiff competition from the newer Oticon Intent (4.70) and Phonak Sphere Infinio (4.64), though it remains a strong performer for those prioritizing speech intelligibility in demanding listening situations.

Lab Test Summary

In our initial fit testing with closed vented domes, the Oticon Real delivered standout speech performance—scoring 3.80 for speech in quiet and an impressive 2.50 for speech in noise, both well above category averages. Music streaming quality was a particular strength at 4.20, among the better initial-fit streaming scores we've measured. However, own-voice comfort scored 2.40, reflecting some occlusion effects typical of the closed dome coupling, and feedback handling at 4.00 came in below the category average of 4.77. The overall initial fit score of 3.28 indicates solid out-of-box performance with minimal professional adjustment.

What is HearAdvisor's Initial Fit?

The Initial Fit approximates the most likely settings and eartips for a typical moderate hearing loss. Results are measured across the same 72 acoustic scenes in our custom-built lab, then scored on a 5-star scale using an auditory model.
