How to interpret our scores.
Please read the information in the FAQ below before making any decisions based on the scores presented above.
Our goal is to evaluate ear plugs in realistic environments and with standardized testing methods. We use industry-standard acoustic testing equipment and measure key metrics like Noise Reduction Rating (NRR), sound quality, and loudness reduction. The results are presented as the scores on this site.
Our methods leverage the best our scientific community has to offer; however, we understand that no testing method is perfect. We remain humble and are continuously working to improve our testing protocols.
The Noise Reduction Rating (NRR) is a measurement of how much sound an earplug can block out, measured in decibels (dB). A higher NRR means more noise reduction. For example, an NRR of 16 means the earplug can reduce noise levels by approximately 16 decibels.
However, NRR is just one factor to consider. Sound quality and comfort are equally important for long-term use.
Sound Quality measures how natural and balanced audio sounds when wearing ear plugs. Good ear plugs should reduce volume without distorting music, voices, or other sounds. We measure this using sophisticated acoustic analysis to evaluate frequency response and distortion.
Higher scores indicate better sound quality, meaning the earplug preserves the natural sound while reducing volume.
Loudness Reduction measures how much perceived loudness is reduced when wearing ear plugs. This differs from NRR as it accounts for how the human ear perceives changes in volume across different frequencies.
A higher loudness reduction score means sounds will feel quieter and more comfortable in noisy environments.
Some ear plugs come with interchangeable filters or settings that allow you to customize the level of noise reduction. For example, one filter might provide light protection for conversations, while another provides maximum protection for very loud environments.
We test each acoustic setup separately to give you a complete picture of the earplug's versatility.
Not necessarily. Price doesn't always correlate with performance. We've found excellent performing ear plugs at various price points. A $20 earplug with a high SoundGrade can provide better value than a $60 earplug with similar or lower scores.
Focus on the metrics that matter most for your use case: sound quality for musicians, NRR for construction work, or a balance of both for general use.
We report data on the acoustic performance of ear plugs, but comfort and fit are subjective factors that vary by individual ear anatomy. What fits comfortably for one person may not work for another.
We recommend reading detailed product reviews and, when possible, trying ear plugs before committing to a purchase. Many manufacturers offer trial periods or money-back guarantees.
