Jabra Enhance Plus Expert Review

Mid-Priced OTC

2022

Summary

The Jabra Enhance Plus is a mid-priced OTC hearing aid ($799) that earned a B grade in HearAdvisor's lab testing, ranking in the top 30% of the OTC hearing aid category. This visible-in-ear device delivers notably strong speech performance but comes with a significant trade-off in own-voice comfort.

In our lab testing, the Enhance Plus demonstrated its core strength: speech clarity. Speech in quiet measured 1.48 points above the category average, and speech in noise scored 1.30 points above average—making it a standout performer for understanding conversation. Music streaming quality also tested above average, and feedback handling was solid throughout testing.

The major drawback is own-voice occlusion. At 2.21 points below the category average, users may notice their own voice sounds boomy or hollow—a common issue with closed-dome fittings that this device couldn't overcome. This is worth serious consideration for anyone sensitive to how their own speech sounds.

At its price point, the Enhance Plus faces stiff competition. The Sony CRE-E10 and Elehear Beyond Pro both scored significantly higher in the same price range. Budget-conscious shoppers should also note that the Apple AirPods Pro 2 offers similar overall sound performance at $249. The Jabra Enhance Plus is best suited for users who prioritize speech understanding over own-voice comfort and want iPhone streaming with hands-free capability in a rechargeable package.

In the initial fit condition with closed domes, the Jabra Enhance Plus delivered above-average speech performance right out of the box. Speech in quiet (3.10/5) and speech in noise (1.90/5) both exceeded category averages, while feedback handling was excellent at 4.90/5. Music streaming performed well at 3.80/5. However, the own-voice score of 0.30/5 was dramatically below average, indicating significant occlusion effects that may make the user's voice sound unnatural. The overall initial fit score of 2.62/5 was above average despite this weakness.

After tuning—while maintaining the same closed dome coupling—the Jabra Enhance Plus showed meaningful improvement. Speech in quiet jumped to 4.10/5 and speech in noise improved to 2.50/5, representing a 0.49-point overall fit score increase. Feedback handling remained strong at 4.70/5, and music streaming held steady. Unfortunately, own-voice occlusion remained unchanged at 0.30/5, indicating this limitation is inherent to the device's design rather than a fitting issue. The tuned fit score of 3.11/5 was above average for the category.
