Eargo Link Expert Review

Mid-Priced OTC
Released
2024

Summary

The Eargo Link is a mid-priced OTC hearing aid released in 2024, earning a B grade with a SoundScore of 4.00/5 in HearAdvisor's lab testing. At $799, it positions itself in the competitive mid-tier OTC segment and ranks in the top 23% of all OTC hearing aids tested.

In our testing, the Eargo Link demonstrated notably strong performance in speech-in-noise situations, scoring a full point above the category average—a meaningful advantage for users who struggle in noisy environments like restaurants or social gatherings. Music streaming quality also impressed, measuring nearly a point above average, making it a solid choice for those who frequently stream audio from their phones. The device supports both iPhone and Android streaming with hands-free capability.

However, the Eargo Link shows a significant weakness in own-voice comfort, scoring 1.21 points below the category average. This is particularly pronounced in the tuned fit condition, where the closed dome coupling necessary to meet prescriptive targets resulted in substantial occlusion effects. Users sensitive to hearing their own voice may find this bothersome.

At its price point, the Eargo Link faces stiff competition. The Sony CRE-E10 offers top-tier performance at a similar price, while options like the Lexie B2 Plus and Lucid Engage also deliver strong results. The Eargo Link is best suited for users who prioritize speech clarity in challenging listening environments and enjoy streaming music, and who are less concerned about own-voice naturalness.

In the initial fit condition with an open dome, the Eargo Link delivered above-average performance across most metrics in our lab testing. Speech in quiet scored 3.30/5, while speech in noise reached 1.50/5—both exceeding category averages. Own-voice comfort measured a respectable 3.40/5 with the open coupling, and feedback handling was solid at 4.60/5. Music streaming scored 2.90/5, slightly below what the device achieves when tuned. The overall initial fit score of 2.91/5 reflects a capable out-of-box experience that requires minimal adjustment for basic use.

The tuned fit condition required switching to a closed dome to better match prescriptive targets, which created a notable trade-off in our testing. While speech in noise improved to 2.20/5 and music streaming jumped significantly to 4.40/5, the closed coupling dramatically impacted own-voice comfort, dropping it to 1.30/5. Speech in quiet actually decreased slightly to 2.90/5. Feedback handling remained excellent at 4.70/5. The overall tuned fit score of 2.82/5 reflects the occlusion penalty from the more occluding coupling required for target matching.
