The Audien Hearing Atom is a budget-priced OTC hearing aid that earned a C SoundGrade in HearAdvisor's lab testing, placing it in the bottom third of the OTC hearing aid category. At $99, it represents one of the most affordable entry points into hearing amplification, though our testing reveals significant performance trade-offs at this price point.
In our lab evaluations, the Atom struggled with core speech understanding tasks. Speech in quiet and speech in noise scores both fell well below category averages, suggesting limited benefit for users seeking improved conversation clarity. The device does excel in one area: feedback handling earned a perfect 5.0/5 score, meaning users are unlikely to experience the whistling or squealing that can plague some hearing devices.
Notably, the Atom offers no streaming capability and lacks app-based customization, which limits its functionality compared to similarly-priced competitors. The Elehear Beyond, also in the budget tier, achieved a significantly higher 4.35/5 SoundScore while offering more features. Even the HSKLock Hearing Aid at $69 outperformed the Atom in our testing.
The Audien Hearing Atom may appeal to first-time users seeking minimal investment to explore amplification, but those with meaningful hearing loss should consider higher-performing alternatives. The device's simple operation and stable feedback performance are offset by limited speech benefit in our standardized test conditions.
