RCA In-Ear Expert Review

Budget OTC

2023

Summary

The RCA In-Ear is a budget-priced OTC hearing aid that earned a D grade in HearAdvisor's lab testing, ranking near the bottom of the OTC category at #50 of 56 devices tested. At $249, it falls in the lower price tier but faces stiff competition from significantly better-performing alternatives.

In our standardized testing, the RCA In-Ear struggled considerably with core hearing aid functions. Speech intelligibility scores—both in quiet and noisy environments—measured well below average, which is concerning given that improving speech understanding is the primary purpose of amplification devices. The device does perform adequately on feedback handling, achieving a perfect score in that metric, and own-voice comfort measured slightly above average.

The lack of music streaming capability limits versatility compared to many competitors in this price range. Notably, better-performing alternatives exist at the same or lower prices: the JLab Hear OTC ($99.99) and Lucid Enrich Pro ($199) both significantly outperform the RCA In-Ear on speech metrics while costing less. The Elehear Beyond, also in the budget tier, achieved a dramatically higher score of 4.35.

The RCA In-Ear may appeal to consumers drawn to the familiar brand name, but our lab testing indicates that shoppers seeking meaningful speech improvement should consider alternatives. Those prioritizing value would find considerably better sound performance from other budget OTC options.

In the initial fit condition using a closed vented dome, the RCA In-Ear delivered well-below-average performance on speech intelligibility metrics. Speech in quiet and speech in noise both scored in negative territory, indicating minimal benefit for the target hearing-loss profile in our testing. Feedback handling was a bright spot, scoring 5.0 out of 5, and own-voice comfort measured slightly above average at 2.60. The overall initial fit score of 0.59 reflects the device's limited amplification benefit despite stable acoustic performance.

The tuned fit condition showed no improvement over the initial fit, with identical scores across all metrics. The same closed vented dome coupling was maintained, and the device's limited adjustability meant no meaningful optimization was possible. Speech scores remained well below average, while feedback handling and own-voice comfort held steady. The unchanged fit score of 0.59 suggests the RCA In-Ear lacks the flexibility to be tailored for improved speech benefit through professional adjustment.
