MDHearing VoltMax Expert Review

Mid-Priced OTC
Released
2022

Summary

The MDHearing VoltMax is a mid-priced OTC behind-the-ear hearing aid released in 2022 at $699. In our lab testing, it achieved a SoundGrade of C, placing it in the bottom 20% of OTC hearing aids we've evaluated.

The VoltMax struggles significantly with speech intelligibility, particularly in noisy environments where it scored well below the category average. Speech in quiet performance was also below average, which limits its usefulness across common listening situations. The one bright spot is feedback handling, where the device performed above average with a perfect score in both fit conditions—users shouldn't experience whistling or squealing issues.

At this price point, the VoltMax faces stiff competition from substantially better-performing alternatives. Devices like the Sony CRE-E10 and Elehear Beyond Pro offer dramatically superior sound performance in the same price range. Even MDHearing's own lower-priced Volt model at $397 outperformed the VoltMax in our testing, achieving a higher overall sound score.

The VoltMax may appeal to users who prioritize feedback-free operation above all else, but most consumers seeking a mid-priced OTC solution would be better served by exploring the numerous alternatives that deliver significantly better speech clarity for similar or lower investment.

In the initial fit condition with a vented sleeve coupling, the MDHearing VoltMax delivered below-average speech intelligibility in quiet and struggled substantially in noisy environments, scoring in negative territory for speech in noise. Feedback handling was a standout at 5.0/5, indicating excellent stability without whistling. Own-voice comfort measured slightly above average, suggesting acceptable occlusion levels with the vented fitting. The overall initial fit score of 1.33/5 reflects well-below-average out-of-box performance compared to other OTC devices.

Switching to a closed sleeve coupling in the tuned fit condition yielded only modest improvements. Speech in quiet improved slightly to 2.0/5, while speech in noise remained well below average at -0.4/5. Feedback handling maintained its excellent 5.0/5 rating even with the more occluding coupling. Own-voice comfort decreased marginally to 2.4/5, a typical trade-off with closed fittings. The tuned fit score of 1.52/5 represents a 0.20-point improvement over initial fit but still falls below the category average.
