Measured Metrics

SoundScore: 5 Acoustic Dimensions

Our lab evaluates every hearing aid on five standardized metrics: speech in quiet, speech in noise, music streaming, own-voice comfort, and feedback control. The score card below shows how the Eargo SE performed on each measure. The purple SoundScore graph is the overall result, and the five graphs after it break it into individual measurements for the selected fit. Each curve shows how scores are spread across all tested hearing aids, and the dot and number mark the score for Eargo SE.

Bottom Line

Our Lab Assessment of the Eargo SE

The Eargo SE is a premium-priced OTC hearing aid ($1,699) featuring an invisible-in-ear design. In our lab testing, it earned a B grade with a SoundScore of 3.2/5, placing it in the top 85% of the OTC hearing aid category—ranking #56 of 65 devices tested.

Speech performance presents a mixed picture. The Eargo SE scores 3.2/5 for speech in quiet, a solid result that sits 0.43 points above the category average. However, speech in noise performance is low at 1.3/5, falling 0.23 points below average. Feedback handling is excellent at 4.6/5, slightly above the category average, meaning users can expect stable performance without whistling issues during normal use.

The most significant limitation is music streaming, which scores 0.0/5—nearly 2 points below the category average. Users who prioritize streaming audio from their phones should be aware of this substantial weakness. Own-voice comfort scores a mixed 2.4/5, just slightly below the category average.

At its premium price point, the Eargo SE faces stiff competition. Several OTC alternatives deliver comparable or better sound performance at lower prices. The invisible-in-ear form factor is the Eargo SE's primary differentiator, appealing to users who prioritize cosmetic discretion. Those who value the nearly invisible design and primarily need help with speech in quieter environments may find the Eargo SE suitable, but buyers seeking balanced performance across streaming and challenging listening situations should explore alternatives.

The notes below document the specific settings, firmware version, and test parameters used during our Eargo SE evaluation. This information ensures our measurements can be understood in their full technical context.

Lab Notes

Initial fit observations

Out of the box with its Trumpet ear coupling, the Eargo SE delivers a normalized Initial Score of 3.0/5. Speech in quiet starts at 1.9/5, while speech in noise measures 1.0/5—both below what tuning can achieve. Feedback handling performs well at 4.6/5, and own-voice comfort sits at 2.4/5. Music streaming scores 0.0/5 in this configuration. The initial fit provides functional hearing support but leaves meaningful room for improvement through adjustment.

Tuned fit observations

After tuning (while retaining the same Trumpet coupling), the normalized Tuned Score improves to 3.6/5—a 0.5-point gain over the initial fit. Speech in quiet jumps notably to 3.2/5, and speech in noise improves to 1.3/5. Feedback handling remains excellent at 4.6/5, and own-voice comfort holds steady at 2.4/5. Music streaming remains at 0.0/5. The tuned configuration demonstrates that adjustment meaningfully improves speech clarity, particularly in quieter environments.
