JLab Hear OTC vs Widex Moment SmartRIC

The JLab Hear OTC is a budget-priced OTC hearing aid released in 2024, earning a B grade with a SoundScore of 3.5/5 in our lab testing. At $100, it represents one of the most affordable entry points into the OTC hearing aid market, ranking #36 of 65 devices in its category. This visible-in-ear device delivers a distinctive performance profile with clear strengths and weaknesses. Its standout feature is excellent music streaming quality, scoring 4.6/5—a remarkable 2.68 points above the category average. Feedback handling is equally impressive at 5.0/5, meaning users can expect stable performance without whistling during daily activities. These results suggest JLab leveraged its audio expertise from consumer earbuds in developing this product. However, speech clarity presents challenges. Speech in quiet scored 2.1/5 (0.67 points below category average), while speech in noise scored 1.0/5 (0.46 points below average). Own-voice comfort also measured low at 1.8/5. These limitations are significant for users prioritizing conversation clarity, which is typically the primary reason people seek hearing aids. The JLab Hear OTC is best suited for budget-conscious consumers who value music and media streaming alongside basic amplification, rather than those needing maximum speech intelligibility. Features include rechargeable batteries, iPhone and Android streaming, and hands-free functionality. Buyers seeking stronger speech performance in this price range may want to compare options like the higher-scoring Elehear Beyond or Apple AirPods Pro 2.

This may require more careful fitting to avoid whistling in certain situations. The Widex Moment SmartRIC offers rechargeable batteries, iPhone and Android streaming, and hands-free functionality. It has earned HearAdvisor's Expert's Choice Award in both 2023 and 2024.
